Analytical Paper: In this requirement, you will select a country and will critically analyze it based on our textbook. This paper should be at least 2000 words in length. You must provide a word count at the end of your paper. The paper is due on Sunday May 15^th. Everyone will select a different country. Your selection must be approved and registered by me; therefore, you must contact me directly regarding your selection. The deadline for selecting/registering your country with me is Sunday, April 3^rd. The deadline for submitting your review is Sunday May ^22nd. Late submissions will not be accepted.

You will use the following format in your paper (Country Analysis):

1. Introduction (At least 100 words)

2. A Brief History of the country: Before WW I, (At least 500 words)

A Brief History of Colonialism in the country: Who colonized the country and how long did they stay……

South Africa: Julius Malema Vows To Reclaim African Land From White Settlers

The leader of South Africa’s opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) movement has launched his party’s campaign for the upcoming local elections, promising to rescue citizens from poverty, unemployment and corrupt government.
Around 40,000 people turned up at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday displaying massive support for fiery EFF leader Julius Malema’s promises to reclaim African land from white settlers without compensation and nationalise banks.
The huge turnout was a shot across the bows of the ANC, which failed to fill a similar stadium during the launch of its own manifesto in the coastal city of East London two weeks ago.
“We are not chasing the whites away. We are saying you have too much land. We want you here in South Africa, but 80 percent of the land belongs to us,” Malema told the crowd.
The white minority still holds the vast majority of farmland as well as a disproportionate share of the country’s wealth, and the EFF is capitalising on African discontent over the perceived lack of change under the ANC government since the end of apartheid 22 years ago.
Malema’s Campaign Promises
Malema, clad in the EFF’s signature red overalls and beret, made many promises from free land, water and electricity for the poor to flushing toilets in all homes as he campaigned ahead of municipal elections in August.
“We want Black communities to be like white communities,” he told the enthusiastic crowd.

Tugrul Keskin - Assistant Professor of International and Middle Eastern Studies

Tugrul Keskin is an Assistant Professor of International and Middle Eastern Studies and an affiliated faculty of Black Studies, Sociology and the Center For Turkish Studies at Portland State University. He is also the Middle East Studies Coordinator (INTL). His research and teaching interests include Sociology of Islam and the Middle East, Social and Political Theory, Post-Colonial Theory, Islamic Movements, Development and Urbanization in the Middle East, Sociology of Africa, and Modern Kurdish, Uyghur and Turkish Nationalism. Previously, Dr. Keskin taught as an instructor of Sociology and Africana Studies at Virginia Tech University and has also taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at James Madison University and Radford University. He received his PhD in Sociology from Virginia Tech, with certificate degrees in Africana Studies, Social and Political Thought, and International Research and Development. He is the founder and moderator of the Sociology of Islam mailing list, and editor of the Sociology of Islam and Muslim Societies Newsletter: http://www.pdx.edu/sociologyofislam. Dr. Keskin has recently had his edited book, The Sociology of Islam: Secularism Economy and Politics published by Garnet/Ithaca Press, 2011. Tugrul Keskin is a board member of Sociologists Without Borders and serves as a book review editor of Societies Without Borders http://societieswithoutborders.org/.
