Burası Afrika. Cebelitarık'tan Ümit Burnu'na, Kızıldeniz'den Atlas Okyanusu'na insanoğlunun en eski yurtlarından biri. Hatta belki birincisi. Yaklaşık 1 milyar insan bu koca kıtada bugün modern hayatın getirdiği şartlar ve imkanlarla yaşıyor. Dünyanın her yerinde olduğu gibi. Ancak Afrika'nın istisnaları da yok değil. Arap Yarımadası'nın karşısı Kızıldeniz boyunca Doğu Afrika olarak tanımlanıyor. Bilim insanlarının bir kısmı burada bulunan yüzbinlerce yıl öncesine ait kalıntıları yorumlayarak burayı insanlığın dünya üzerinde ilk ortaya çıktığı yer adlandırıyor. Ve bugün Etiyopya'nın Omo Nehri vadisinde yaşayan bu kabile insanları atalarından aldıkları ilham doğrultusunda bize onları çağrıştıran yaşam tabloları sunuyor. Burada yalnızca sıradan bir şehir dışı doğası değil, dünyanın en özel doğal yaşam alanları birbiri ardınca sıralanıyor.

REGIONAL ISSUES IREU 424 AFRICAN SOCIETY AND POLITICS - Country Analysis Selection - MALTEPE UNIVERSITESI

COUNTRY SELECTION:

Analytical Paper: In this requirement, you will select a country and will critically analyze it based on our textbook. This paper should be at least 2000 words in length. You must provide a word count at the end of your paper. The paper is due on Sunday May 15^th. Everyone will select a different country. Your selection must be approved and registered by me; therefore, you must contact me directly regarding your selection. The deadline for selecting/registering your country with me is Sunday, April 3^rd. The deadline for submitting your review is Sunday May 15^th. Late submissions will not be accepted.

You will use the following format in your paper (Country Analysis):

1. Introduction (At least 100 words)

2. A Brief History of the country: Before WW I, (At least 500 words)

A Brief History of Colonialism in the country: Who colonized the country and how long did they stay……

3. Social and Cultural Structure: Ethnicity, race, gender, population, education level, urbanization (At least 500 words)

Tugrul Keskin - Assistant Professor of International and Middle Eastern Studies

Tugrul Keskin is an Assistant Professor of International and Middle Eastern Studies and an affiliated faculty of Black Studies, Sociology and the Center For Turkish Studies at Portland State University. He is also the Middle East Studies Coordinator (INTL). His research and teaching interests include Sociology of Islam and the Middle East, Social and Political Theory, Post-Colonial Theory, Islamic Movements, Development and Urbanization in the Middle East, Sociology of Africa, and Modern Kurdish, Uyghur and Turkish Nationalism. Previously, Dr. Keskin taught as an instructor of Sociology and Africana Studies at Virginia Tech University and has also taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at James Madison University and Radford University. He received his PhD in Sociology from Virginia Tech, with certificate degrees in Africana Studies, Social and Political Thought, and International Research and Development. He is the founder and moderator of the Sociology of Islam mailing list, and editor of the Sociology of Islam and Muslim Societies Newsletter: http://www.pdx.edu/sociologyofislam. Dr. Keskin has recently had his edited book, The Sociology of Islam: Secularism Economy and Politics published by Garnet/Ithaca Press, 2011. Tugrul Keskin is a board member of Sociologists Without Borders and serves as a book review editor of Societies Without Borders http://societieswithoutborders.org/.
